Why We Went Coconut-Free (And What We Use Instead)
Share
Coconut oil is in almost every bar of natural soap out there. It was in most of ours too, until customers started telling us it shouldn't be.
We Didn't Set Out to Build a Second Line
This started as a handful of messages, not a strategy. Customers with a coconut allergy or a reaction to coconut-heavy soap kept asking the same question: is there a version of this without coconut in it? For a while the honest answer was no. Enough people asked that it stopped being a one-off and started looking like a real gap in what we made.
What Coconut Oil Is Actually Doing In a Bar
In cold process soap, coconut oil earns its spot because of lauric and myristic acid, the fatty acids responsible for a hard bar and a big, fast lather. Those same fatty acids are also what make coconut oil more stripping on skin than gentler oils like olive or tallow, and they're the specific part that triggers a reaction for people with a coconut sensitivity or allergy.
Most "gentle" or "natural" soap still leans on coconut oil for exactly this reason. It works, and it's cheap. That leaves anyone with a coconut allergy picking between a bar that suits their skin and a bar that doesn't react badly.
What Actually Replaces It
Our coconut-free bars swap coconut oil for babassu oil, grass-fed tallow, or both, depending on the formula. Babassu comes from the babassu palm and has a fatty acid profile close enough to coconut's to do a similar job in the lather, without being coconut. Contains babassu oil, a palm-family oil. If you have a coconut or tree nut allergy, patch test before use.
Tallow is the other base we lean on. Its fatty acid profile sits close to human sebum, the skin's own oil, which is a lot of why tallow-based bars tend to feel different, and often gentler, on skin that's already reactive.
What Didn't Change
Going coconut-free isn't a reformulation of everything we make, it's a parallel line built for a specific problem. If coconut was never an issue for your skin, the original formulas are still here, unchanged. What carries over to every coconut-free bar: cold process, a minimum 4-week cure, essential oils only, never fragrance oils.
Where to Start
If you're shopping coconut-free for the first time, the Coconut-Free Soap Sampler is the low-risk way to find your bar before committing to a full size. If scent itself, not just coconut, is the thing your skin reacts to, The Naked Bar skips essential oils entirely. The full lineup lives in the coconut-free collection.
