What Superfatting Means in Cold Process Soap - And Why It Matters

Superfatting is one of those soap-making terms that comes up often but isn't always explained clearly. Here's what it actually means and why it affects how handmade soap feels on your skin.
The Chemistry Basics
Cold process soap is made by combining oils with lye (sodium hydroxide). The reaction between them, saponification, converts both the oils and the lye into soap salts and glycerin. Neither the oils nor the lye remain in a properly made finished bar.
Superfatting is the practice of using slightly less lye than would be required to fully convert all of the oils. The result: some percentage of the oils remains unsaponified in the finished bar, as free oils rather than soap.
Why Soap Makers Superfat
Those free oils do two things. First, they provide a buffer against any lye miscalculation, a bar with some unsaponified oil is less likely to be lye-heavy. Second, the free oils condition the skin during washing. They're present throughout the bar, and during use they contribute a moisturizing quality that fully-saponified soap doesn't have.
This is a meaningful part of why handmade cold process soap feels different from commercial bar soap on the skin. Commercial soap often has its glycerin removed (it's sold separately) and is typically not superfatted. Handmade soap retains the glycerin and adds the benefit of unsaponified oils.
What Percentage Makes Sense
Most cold process soap makers work in the 5-8% superfat range. This is enough to provide the conditioning benefit and the safety buffer without making the bar soft or shortening its shelf life.
Higher superfat percentages (10%+) can produce a very conditioning bar but tend to make softer, less long-lasting soap, and can increase the risk of rancidity over time because there's more free oil available to oxidize.

What You'll See on the Label
Superfatted oils often show up on the ingredient list in their regular oil names rather than their soap salt names. If you see "olea europaea (olive) fruit oil" alongside "sodium olivate" on the same label, it means olive oil appears both as a soap salt (saponified) and as a free oil (superfatted).
Not all makers list the superfatted portion separately from the saponified portion, so the label alone doesn't always tell you the superfat percentage. Asking the maker directly is the most reliable way to find out.
Why It Matters for Sensitive Skin
For skin that tends to feel stripped or dry after washing, superfatting is part of what makes a well-formulated handmade soap feel different from commercial soap. The free oils in the bar replenish some of what cleansing removes.
Combined with a formula that uses skin-compatible base oils, tallow, olive, shea, and avoids ingredients that are harsher for reactive skin, a properly superfatted bar can feel genuinely different on skin that doesn't do well with standard soap.
