Why We Rebuilt Rosemary & Lemon Without Coconut Oil

Our original Coastal Rosemary & Lemon bar has been one of our steadier sellers for a while now. It's also had coconut oil in it the whole time, which meant a chunk of the people who most needed a soap like this couldn't use it. That's the kind of thing you don't notice until enough customers point it out.

The Scent Was Never the Problem

Rosemary and lemon is a strong combination on its own. Lemon leads bright and sharp, rosemary settles in underneath with something more herbal, and a little bergamot keeps it from reading like straight cleaning-product citrus. None of that needed fixing. The rosemary was already infused directly into the olive oil rather than just added as an essential oil on top, which is part of why the scent carries through the whole bar instead of fading after the first wash.

What Actually Changed

The original recipe used lard as its base fat. We rebuilt it around grass-fed tallow with babassu oil standing in for the coconut oil we used to rely on for lather. Babassu does a similar job structurally, it's just not coconut, which matters if coconut derivatives are the thing your skin reacts to. Contains babassu oil, a palm-family oil. If you have a coconut or tree nut allergy, patch test before use. Goat milk powder and kaolin clay stayed in the formula for that soft, creamy finish the original was known for.

Here's the thing about reformulating something people already love: you're not allowed to make it worse in the process. Same scent, same feel, different base. That was the whole assignment.

Why This One Took Longer Than the Others

Of everything in our current coconut-free lineup, this bar was the last one to actually get poured. Partly because rosemary-infusing a full batch of olive oil takes real lead time, and partly because we wanted the reformulation to genuinely match the original before it went anywhere near a listing.
