A coconut-free bar built on charcoal and French green clay, scented with a petitgrain and tea tree blend. Reformulated from an earlier version of this bar, this recipe drops coconut entirely and rebuilds the base around olive, babassu, rice bran, kokum, and shea.

Clay and Charcoal Do the Job. The Base Doesn't Get in the Way.

What changed from the earlier version is the base underneath the charcoal and clay: no coconut oil, so the bar works for coconut-reactive skin. The olive oil is calendula-infused, and a small amount of colloidal oatmeal sits in the batter for a softer finish against the clay's pull. Babassu oil stands in for coconut's job in the lather. Scent is a five-oil blend built for a clean, slightly resinous finish: petitgrain and tea tree upfront, frankincense and cedarwood underneath, lavender rounding the edges.

What's In It

Olive oil, calendula-infused is the largest oil in the bar. Conditioning and mild, it slows the trace down and carries the calendula infusion through the whole formula, not just the top.

Babassu oil stands in for coconut oil. Similar lather and hardness, unrelated to coconut by species. It's palm-family, disclosed below.

Rice bran oil adds a light, silky conditioning layer without making the bar feel greasy.

Kokum butter firms the bar and adds a touch of extra hardness on top of what the other oils provide.

Shea butter keeps the rinse from feeling stripped, especially against the pull of the charcoal and clay.

Castor oil gives the lather its density and helps it rinse clean.

Colloidal oatmeal softens the bar's feel against skin. That's its whole job here.

Bamboo charcoal is porous and pulls surface oil and grime at a molecular level.

French green clay does similar work from a different angle, drawing a broader mix of surface debris, and gives the bar its natural sage-green color. No dye.

Tea tree, petitgrain, frankincense, lavender, and cedarwood essential oils make up the scent. Clean and a little resinous, not sweet or floral.
