What Hard Water Actually Does to Your Laundry

Hard water contains dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. When those minerals hit the surfactants in laundry powder, they bind to them. The surfactants are now busy holding onto minerals instead of lifting soil and odor out of fabric.
