How to Read a Cold Process Soap Label (And What to Ignore)

Soap labels can be confusing, especially cold process soap, where the ingredient names on the label don't always match what went into the pot. Here's how to read them, what the names mean, and what's actually worth paying attention to.
Why the Ingredients Look Different Than You'd Expect
Cold process soap is made by combining oils with lye (sodium hydroxide). During saponification, the chemical reaction that creates soap, the oils and lye transform completely: neither is present in the finished bar. What you have instead are the salt forms of those oils, named under the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) system.
This is why coconut oil becomes "sodium cocoate" on a soap label, olive oil becomes "sodium olivate," and tallow becomes "sodium tallowate." The "sodium" prefix signals that saponification happened, meaning the oil reacted with sodium hydroxide and became a soap salt.
Lye itself doesn't appear on the finished product label because it's fully consumed in the reaction. This confuses some people who worry about lye in handmade soap, but a properly made cold process bar has no lye remaining in it.
The Most Common Soap Ingredients and What They Do
Sodium cocoate: From coconut oil. Creates a hard bar and a fluffy, abundant lather. High in lauric acid, which can be irritating for sensitive skin. If this is high on the ingredient list and your skin tends to react, our coconut-free collection is formulated without it.
Sodium olivate: From olive oil. Contributes a conditioning, creamy quality. Produces a softer bar on its own, usually combined with harder-bar oils.
Sodium tallowate: From beef tallow. Creates a hard, long-lasting bar with a creamy lather. Similar fatty acid profile to human skin, which is why tallow-based soaps tend to feel different on skin than plant-oil-only soaps.
Sodium castorate: From castor oil. Used in small percentages for lather quality. Castor contributes to a sticky, bubbly lather and helps other oils lather better.
Sodium shea butterate: From shea butter. Conditioning. Used at smaller percentages to contribute a smooth skin feel.
Superfatted Oils vs. Soap Salts
In most cold process soap, some percentage of the oils is left unsaponified, meaning they don't react and stay in the bar as free oils. This is called superfatting, and it's what makes handmade soap feel different from commercial soap.
These unsaponified oils appear on the label under their regular names, olive oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil, rather than their sodium salt names. If you see both "sodium olivate" and "olea europaea (olive) fruit oil" on the same label, it means olive oil was both saponified and used as a superfat.
What to Actually Look For
If you have sensitive or reactive skin, the ingredients worth paying close attention to:
- Sodium cocoate or sodium laurate: coconut oil-derived, can be irritating for some
- Fragrance / parfum: synthetic fragrance blend, common irritant
- Colorants: micas, ultramarines, oxides, generally well-tolerated but worth noting if you have specific sensitivities
- Essential oils: named specifically if the maker is transparent about them
A soap label that lists specific oils and additives rather than vague terms like "natural ingredients" is a better sign than one that doesn't.
What You Can Ignore
The water content. Water is used to dissolve the lye in the soap-making process and fully evaporates during cure, so it's not meaningfully present in a fully cured bar.
The lye (sodium hydroxide). It's on some labels for transparency, but as explained above, it's not in the finished soap.
Vague front-of-label claims like "natural," "clean," or "plant-based." These terms aren't regulated in the US for soap, so they're marketing, not formulation information. The ingredient list is what matters.
