The Truth About “Eco-Friendly” Cleaning Products: What to Look For

Are Your "Eco-Friendly" Cleaning Products Really Green?

With so many products labeled "natural," "green" or "eco-friendly," it's easy to assume they're good for you and the planet. But many brands greenwash their products, using vague claims to look more sustainable than they are.

How can you tell the difference? Here's what to look for.

At Sea Spray Soap, we believe in ingredient transparency and thoughtfully chosen ingredients. Here's what to check when shopping for eco-friendly cleaning products, and what we do differently.

How to Spot Greenwashing in Cleaning Products

Beware of vague claims. Terms like "green," "eco-safe" and "natural" are not regulated, so brands can use them without proof. Look for certifications or ingredient transparency instead.

Check the ingredient list. Some brands claim to be "plant-based" but still contain petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances and harsh preservatives. A real eco-friendly cleaner has recognizable, biodegradable ingredients.

Avoid synthetic fragrances. "Fragrance" on a label can hide a blend of undisclosed ingredients, some of which may cause allergic reactions. Look for essential oils instead.

Look for minimal-plastic packaging. Some "eco-friendly" brands still use a lot of plastic. Choose products that come in biodegradable, refillable or low-plastic packaging.

What to Look for in a Truly Eco-Friendly Cleaner

Clearly labeled ingredients: Every ingredient should be listed, with no vague terms like "proprietary blend" or "natural surfactants."
Biodegradable formulas: Ingredients should break down naturally.
Essential oils over synthetic fragrances: Choose products scented with pure essential oils, not "fragrance" or "parfum."
No unnecessary fillers: Look for products without SLS, phosphates, parabens and artificial dyes.
Sustainable packaging: Look for minimal-plastic, compostable or reusable packaging.
